When you think of Cali Roots you think of the ultimate reggae weekend. We first attended Cali Roots in 2012 and it’s the type of life-changing musical experience that built our pride as reggae fans even more. And having the chance to see Rebelution play at Cali Roots will always be one of the most incredible live music experiences we’ve ever witnessed. Rebelution first headlined Cali Roots in 2011 and the band’s consistent development and dedication are so fun to watch. Dailyreggae.com caught up with Rebelution’s Wesley Finley to get his take on what makes Cali Roots so special, Rebelution’s growth headlining Cali Roots, and his excitement for his Cali Roots 2022.

What do you think makes Cali Roots so special, is it the people, the beautiful setting of Monterey, or the art that accompanies the music?

Being from the Monterey area I would have to be biased and say it’s the beautiful setting. But it’s more than that - it’s a reunion for both the fans and the bands, who’ve all toured and attended shows together over the years. And the art provides an alternative visual experience and rounds out the festival.

What has it been like watching the festival grow since you first headlined in 2011?

It’s been fun growing as a band while growing with the festival. I’m glad we were able to perform on the smaller, original stage to have a sense of perspective, then graduate to the larger historical stage where we are now. It’s at capacity these days, which is a good thing. Dan has done a great job of promoting it and handling the growing pains which happen with any successful festival so that it remains a good experience for everyone year after year.

What other bands are you most excited to see at this year's Cali Roots?

Personally, I’m excited to see Turbulence (whose songs we used to cover back in our Isla Vista days), Atmosphere (who I idolized in my hip hop days), Dub Inc (who we did shows with years ago in Europe), and Ice Cube (because, well, he’s Ice Cube).

Is it possible we will hear any unreleased music during your set this year?

While we are still touring on last year’s pandemic release “In The Moment”, we will definitely have some new musical interludes, variations of songs, and perhaps some guest appearances :)
